Scope: Montevideo department includes the capital's neighbourhoods and rural areas. It is not the whole metropolitan area: Canelones is a separate department.
A place to live
Centro and Cordón give you one urban starting point; Pocitos and Punta Carretas another along the rambla. Compare the journeys you would repeat: work, groceries, healthcare appointments and time outdoors. Then try the route at the hours that matter to you. If space around the home matters more, investigate rural Montevideo separately and check how the exact address would fit those same routines.
A place to invest
An apartment for your own use, a house you might rent and rural land answer different needs. Within the city, compare similar buildings, usable space, condition and recurring costs. For a rural property, add access, services and documented use to the comparison. A familiar neighbourhood name does not explain the price of an individual offer; retain the evidence and unanswered questions together.

Montevideo: Internet access, place by place
Two different views of internet access from Uruguay’s 2018 household survey. Keep people and urban households separate: the figures do not measure today’s network coverage or connection quality.

Department-level context for two different populations. These historical indicators do not establish a connection at a particular address.
Ask which provider serves the exact address, what connection is available and whether power and access roads support your daily routine.
Look closer at the places
Centro and Cordón
Use these central neighbourhoods to test your daily urban routine. Walk the immediate streets and compare access to the places you actually need; a district label alone cannot describe a building's surroundings.
Scope: Neighbourhoods in the city of Montevideo
Pocitos and Punta Carretas
If the rambla is part of your ideal week, begin here. Compare the specific block, your routes inland and the property itself. A waterfront setting does not establish a view, service quality or rental income.
Scope: Two Montevideo neighbourhoods; a comparison group, not one administrative unit
Melilla and rural Montevideo
Melilla introduces a different question: how would a home with land fit your daily life? The municipal source documents an agricultural setting. Check access and intended use property by property; rural context is not evidence of productive suitability.
Scope: Rural setting within Montevideo department
Plan the practical steps
Connect the location to the property record
Record the exact address and padrón before comparing properties across neighbourhoods or rural areas. Uruguay's cadastral and registry information serve different purposes. Continue with the country guide and have a local escribano check the specific title and transaction before a purchase.

Plan the banking step at country level
Use the Uruguay guide to review the bank-specific route for foreign non-residents. Confirm the product, required documents and payment arrangements with your chosen bank before making commitments. A department choice does not establish account eligibility.

- Which neighbourhood or rural address fits the journeys you would repeat each week?
- Does the location belong to Montevideo department or to neighbouring Canelones?
- Are the compared properties similar in usable area, condition, access and recurring costs?
Sources and their scope
The original source, its geographic scope and the date checked stay attached to the information. Country or regional context is not proof about an individual property.
How to use this guide
Use this guide for regional orientation and the dated department indicators for context. Services at an address, available properties and comparable completed sales still need verification. This page does not provide a live Uruguay property catalogue or a property valuation.
