Argentina Residency: Routes, Documents and RaDEX (2026)

Choose an immigration route before committing to a long lease or property purchase. Nationality, income and family evidence determine which application to prepare.

Short answer

Argentina has several residence categories. The five routes below cover common nationality, income, employment and family situations; they are not an exhaustive eligibility test. RaDEX is the application channel for people already in Argentina. Applicants abroad should examine the separate entry-permit and consular route. Buying property does not appear among these five categories and should not be treated as proof of eligibility.

Which residence route should you investigate?

Start with evidence you can actually supply. A salary, pension and return on assets are different sources of income in the official categories. The temporary-residence index also includes study and other routes. Migraciones category index.

Selected temporary routes: official service pages checked October 8, 2026
RoutePeriod shownMain evidence and constraint
MERCOSUR nationality2 years; renewableNationality evidence. The service lists eligible native nationals and a narrower list for people naturalized for at least 5 years; a regional passport alone does not resolve every case.
Rentista1 year; renewableIncome from assets abroad, excluding remuneration for personal work; minimum 5 SMVM. Transfers must use financial institutions authorized by BCRA.
Pensionado1 year; renewableCertified regular foreign pension of at least 5 SMVM. This is a pension route, not a generic foreign-income category.
Migrant employee1 year; renewableDependent-employment precontract and employer registrations. The service requires submission of the alta temprana certificate issued by ARCA and signed by the employer within 30 calendar days from application commencement.
Family reunificationUp to 3 years with an Argentine or permanent-resident relative; otherwise the temporary relative’s remaining periodQualifying relationship and the relative’s status, supported by civil records and identity evidence. The eligible family circle varies with that status.

MERCOSUR detail: the service lists native nationals of Uruguay, Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia, Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana and Suriname. For people native to a non-MERCOSUR country, its naturalized-national route lists Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, with at least five years of naturalization. Check the named category rather than assuming the same treatment for every passport.

Family detail: the temporary route covers a spouse, parent or child of an Argentine. For a foreign resident, the service lists spouse, parent, unmarried unemancipated child under 18, or adult child with a disability. Marriage should not be presented as an automatic grant of permanent residence.

Residence, a tourist stay and a precaria are different statuses

Temporary residence has a defined category and validity period. Permanent residence has its own grounds and conditions. A transitory stay is another category; it does not generally authorize paid work, apart from the statutory exceptions or express Migraciones authorization. Keep your current category and permitted activities together in your planning file. Law 25,871, Articles 20 and 51–53.

Migraciones may issue a residencia precaria while a case is resolved, for up to 90 days, renewable through a reasoned decision. It supports stay, entry/exit, work and study under the applicable conditions, but its time does not count toward the residence periods required for arraigo or naturalization. An application receipt is not a promise of approval. Permanent and temporary residents can obtain DNI; a temporary DNI is tied to the authorized residence period. Articles 20, 30 and 32.

Prepare the documents before starting RaDEX

The official services request valid identity, proof of address and regular entry, plus category-specific evidence. Their criminal-record requirements distinguish Argentine records and foreign records from countries where the applicant lived for more than one year during the previous three years. The service pages describe an age threshold above 16; minors need a separate check rather than an assumed adult checklist. Argentine criminal-record processing is integrated into RaDEX. Nationality service and RaDEX steps.

  • Identity and civil records: check validity, exact names and the family relationship you intend to prove.
  • Foreign public documents: establish the applicable apostille or consular-legalization route and any treaty exception before ordering duplicates.
  • Translation: confirm the Argentine public-translator and professional-college certification requirements. The MERCOSUR document instructions contain a limited Portuguese-language exemption for specified Brazilian documents, with a reasoned-doubt exception; it is not a waiver for every Portuguese file. Disposition 1637/2022, Annex I Articles 7 and 13.
  • Minors: confirm parental authorization, custody or guardianship and the child’s own documents with the applicable service.
  • Route evidence: keep the pension certificate, asset-income evidence, employment precontract or family records separate from general identity documents.

This is a preparation sequence. The authority can request additional material; obtain the checklist for your actual category and consular or domestic application.

Applying inside Argentina versus applying from abroad

Already in Argentina: RaDEX requires physical presence in the country and checks regular entry. Register with an email you control, complete the requested data, pay through the platform, upload the documents and attend the personal appointment when called. The published process does not require a gestor. Monitor requests for further documents through the official channel. Official RaDEX sequence.

Still abroad: examine the Migraciones entry permit to be presented at the competent Argentine consulate. The permit page sets out the foreign-document legalization and translation requirements. Do not plan on submitting a domestic RaDEX application while living abroad. Entry permits.

A preferred appointment is not a faster substantive decision. The official FAQ distinguishes the appointment service from case-resolution time; this guide gives no approval deadline. Keep flexible accommodation and a document contingency in the move budget. RaDEX FAQ.

Read the fee units correctly

The official table lists 50 UMSM for MERCOSUR and 100 UMSM for non-MERCOSUR domestic permanent or temporary residence, and the same units for renewal or change of category. Consularly initiated residence is listed separately at 300 or 600 consular units. These are different fee schedules; they should not be added as if every applicant pays both. Migraciones fee table.

UMSM is a fee unit; SMVM is the minimum-wage benchmark used in the income routes. The rentista and pensionado threshold of 5 SMVM is not a 5-UMSM application fee. Check the current benchmark and the payment generated by the official process. DNI, criminal-record charges, translations, legalization and any applicable exemptions need a separate budget; the amounts above are not an all-inclusive relocation price.

Renewal and permanent residence need a calendar and travel record

The RaDEX FAQ says renewal can begin 60 days before expiry. Set a reminder, retain the income or employment evidence needed for your category and record travel dates. Renewal remains an application with requirements, not an automatic rollover. Renewal FAQ.

The current permanent-residence service describes the arraigo route after two years of temporary residence for MERCOSUR nationals or three for non-MERCOSUR nationals, together with means of support and presence conditions. It says at least 50% of the granted period in Argentina and no absence of six consecutive months or more. However, the RaDEX FAQ says presence must be greater than 50%. This wording difference matters at the boundary: confirm the applicable interpretation with Migraciones before relying on an exactly-50% travel plan. Permanent-residence service; FAQ.

The service also lists other grounds, including children of Argentines born abroad and a separate Brazil treaty route. A calendar reaching two or three years does not itself establish approval; use the current ground-specific requirements.

Turn the residence plan into a settlement decision

Build two checklists: one for lawful residence and one for the place where you will live. For the first, establish work authorization, renewal evidence, insurance and document costs. The updated law includes an entry declaration and health-insurance requirement under its regulations. Its healthcare provisions distinguish emergencies, permanent residents and other statuses in nationally managed facilities; do not infer identical rules for every provincial hospital. Articles 8 and 34.

For the second, compare housing, access to work, schools, healthcare and your daily journeys. Our Argentina place hubs organize those local questions. Then use the bank, SIM and ID setup guide for practical onboarding.

Keep property ownership, immigration residence, tax residence and citizenship as separate checks. This page does not determine an individual tax status. Before a purchase, use the foreign-buyer land guide; for the investment-citizenship programme and the current evidence and status, read the citizenship guide. Neither a property listing nor a relocation budget is evidence that an immigration category has been granted.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply for Argentina residence through RaDEX from abroad?

The published domestic RaDEX process requires you to be in Argentina. Applicants living abroad should check the separate entry-permit and consular process with Migraciones and the competent Argentine consulate.

Does foreign remote-work income qualify for rentista residence?

The official rentista service describes income from assets abroad and excludes remuneration for personal work. A foreign salary or freelance payment should not be assumed to qualify under that category.

Does marrying an Argentine automatically grant permanent residence?

The current family-reunification service describes a temporary route with relationship and document requirements. Do not infer an automatic grant of permanent residence from marriage; check the current category and grounds.

Are 5 SMVM and 50 UMSM the same kind of amount?

No. SMVM is the minimum-wage benchmark used for income requirements; UMSM is a migration-fee unit. The income threshold and application fee serve different purposes.

Is permanent residence automatic after two or three years?

No. The arraigo route also requires support and presence conditions. The official pages use different wording at the 50% presence boundary, so confirm the applicable requirement before relying on a borderline travel record.
